About Sarah Pittaway

I’m an artist living in the North Yorkshire Dales, surrounded by open landscapes that shape the way I see, feel, and make. The wide horizons, shifting weather, and quiet expanses of the Dales feed my work with a sense of calm, spaciousness, and colour. Painting has always been a form of regulation for me — a way to settle, to breathe, and to make sense of the world through movement, texture, and intuitive mark‑making.

My work shifts between wild, bold pieces full of energy and gesture, and quiet, minimalist works that hold space and stillness. Some paintings arrive quickly and instinctively; others unfold more slowly. That range reflects how I move through the world — sometimes expansive and expressive, other times gentle and contemplative.

Before focusing on my studio practice, I worked in early years and museum education, and those experiences continue to shape how I make art. Working with young children taught me to value curiosity, experimentation, and the joy of materials. Museum education taught me how people connect with objects — through touch, story, and the small details that spark memory. I have a strong interest in arts and health, and in how making can support wellbeing, regulation, and emotional grounding.

I’m inspired by the rhythms of daily life and the landscapes around me: the curve of a hill, the colour of a field after rain, stacked bowls on a kitchen shelf, the way light moves across a room. These small, familiar moments become starting points for pieces that explore comfort, repetition, and the beauty of things that feel handmade and imperfect.

My hope is that each piece brings a sense of calm, colour, and connection to the homes they live in.
